On the evening of the 8th of October, three of Cape Town’s heaviest metal bands, spearheaded by DevilSpeak, descended on Stellenbosch for a cause that might surprise the public at large: gathering funds for animals in need.
Forming part of a worldwide charity event by numerous artists all around the globe, and benefiting numerous local charities, concerts for this project took place all over the world this past weekend. This leg of the event raised funds for The Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch, who take care of the community’s unwanted, mistreated and neglected pets.
First on the lineup was DevilSpeak, who’s eccentric stage setup set the stage for the evening wonderfully. Never known as a group to disappoint, they got the crowd in the mood wonderfully with their tightly executed, thrashy set. Never ones to disappoint with their showmanship, their powerful performance ensured a that a lively atmosphere hung around for the rest of the evening
Next up were black metallers Nebula Disrupt, who kicked the intensity up a notch with their black metal inspired aural and visual assault. Following close on the heels of their comeback performance at Atavism, they showed no signs of slowing down as they tore through their blistering set, keeping both the crowd and themselves on their toes and enthralled in the electrical atmosphere of their music.
Closing off the evening were Capetonian death metal heavyweights The Fallen Prophets. Their performance ensured that the crowd had no option but to continue to headbang and mosh as night turned to morning, destroying the venue with the pummeling brutality of their set.
The evening was wrapped up with a small charity auction and prize giving as the crowd nursed their drinks (and their necks), bringing an end to what could only be described as a triumphant evening for the darker side of Cape Town’s metal scene.
DevilSpeak had the following closing words to say about this stellar event:
“Thank you to everyone who came out and supported this event, there was over 100 of you and your gees was felt by every band on stage and seen by all the donations given, a full car boot of it, and you raised R2,320.00 towards our cause here from the door!
Lastly thank you to Aandklas Stellenbosch for allowing us to host this event there and for being really awesome in helping it all run smooth with a great person at the door and an awesome sound engineer.
Enjoy your Sunday rest and recovery everyone and thank you all, bands included, for supporting Local-Aid and the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch last night \m/”
Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch had the following to say “Shout out to DevilSpeak for hosting an event in aid of the AWSS. A whopping R4453.65 was raised for our four legged friends. It is only through individuals, like yourselves, that we are able to continue the critical work we do. Please know that you have helped many animals and how appreciative we are of your kindness.”
